About Aokigahara Forest

Aokigahara covers 30 square kilometers at the northwestern base of Mount Fuji. The forest grew over hardened lava from the Jogan eruption in 864 CE. Porous basalt rock absorbs sound, making the woods highly quiet.

You can walk the designated Nature Trails for free. The paths wind past deep holes and exposed tree roots. Never leave the marked trails. The uneven terrain is dangerous and easy to get lost in.

Below the surface, you will find Lava Caves. The Narusawa Ice Cave and Fugaku Wind Cave require a small fee. Read more about Tickets & Prices to plan your budget.

A great value for a day trip outside of Tokyo. We had a small party which made it a lot more personal. Our tour guide was a knowledgeable local with lots of information. We decided to do this around Halloween time and it was well worth the trip to such an eerie forest. Best for those who want to try something out of the ordinary and don’t mind getting extra steps in.

Our guide Tada was fantastic, very knowledgeable, funny and engaging. I enjoyed the walk thru the forest, it was beautiful, a bit otherworldly. For the cave part of the experience I wish I had been informed to wear a sturdy shoe. I had a trail shoe on but think a hiking boot would have been better. Otherwise great day!

Great walk around the forest, it was after a heavy rain, so was quite humid and the whole place looked full with growth, be it all sorts of fungi, young trees, birds and cicadas. Graham was very knowledgeable about how the forest appeared and how the trees grow, and he manages to convey to us the spiritual importance of this forest for the Japanese people. And the cave was very cool.

Grahame was an incredible guide who tailored the walk based on my preference. I learned a lot about Jukai and the significance of My Fuji to Japanese culture.

Our guide C-Jay was lovely and was a real gem while we explored the area, even being flexible to give us a more personalised tour of the local caves

We loved every minute with Ryo. He’s very knowledgable, kind and nice. He also gave us options between different hikes we could choose of. So he’s very flexible and always up for another request. We definetly recommend him and would ask him again to be our guide.

Ryo and Forest Kraft Outdoors was such an incredible experience! We mentioned a few areas that we wanted to visit and he put together an itinerary for the entire day! This included visiting lakes, shrines, and hiking. It was a great way to see everything we wanted with an experienced, knowledgeable, and very kind tour guide. We highly recommend Forest Kraft Outdoors!
